Toyota has a good history of manufacturing tough, reliable off-road vehicles as a car company. The original Land Cruiser was just the beginning, and today Toyota offers a wide range of trucks and SUVs that can take you where the pavement ends.
Here’s a look at some of Toyota’s best off-roaders from the current lineup.
The Toyota Tundra has been fully redesigned for 2022, meaning plenty of new features and a new look for this full-sized pickup. The Tundra is available with four-wheel drive, but it comes standard on the TRD Pro trim. This is the best trim to choose if you're interested in off-roading, as it also includes a front skid plate, 18-inch aluminum wheels, and FOX shocks perfect for driving in mud, sand, or snow, and ensures your Tundra can handle it all.
It also has many features that will keep you entertained while on the road. You can get a large 14-inch entertainment screen, a quality 12-speaker stereo, and a wireless hotspot to stay online no matter where your travels take you.
You’ll also find a new twin-turbocharged V-6 engine that gives it 389 horsepower. The Tundra can do it if you need to tow or haul heavy loads. It can tow up to 12,000 pounds and haul up to 1,940 pounds of cargo in its bed.
The Tundra comes in two styles: the Double Cab and the CrewMax. The Double Cab is best when you only have one front seat passenger or kids riding in the back, as it has more compact rear-row seats. The CrewMax is best for adults or older children riding in the rear, as it has more spacious rear seats.
The Toyota Tacoma is an excellent vehicle for those who want a mid-sized pickup with great off-roading capabilities. The TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro trims are especially well-suited for this activity and come with many standard off-roading features.
The TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro trims of the Toyota Tacoma come with a 3.5-litre V-6 engine that produces 278 horsepower. The TRD trims offer an optional six-speed manual transmission with crawl control. The Tacoma TRD Off-Road has an improved off-roading suspension, a locking rear differential, and shock absorbers.
There are two different cab options available for Tacoma. The first option is the Access Cab which is only big enough to accommodate four people. The second option is the Double Cab which has enough space to seat five passengers. Regarding the cargo bed options, there is a long one that measures 6 feet in length and a more compact version that only measures 5 feet.
The Toyota 4Runner is a great choice for drivers who want a vehicle that can handle tough terrain while having plenty of space for passengers and cargo, and some trims even have an optional third row of seats.
The 4Runner comes with a V-6 engine that produces 270 horsepower. It has a five-speed automatic transmission and standard rear-wheel drive. You can get a four-wheel drive as an optional upgrade on some trims, or you can get it standard on the TRD Off-Road or Off-Road Premium trims.
While this off-road Toyota comes standard with a skid plate, its off-road trims have an improved dynamic suspension system that includes additional skid plates and a locking rear differential.
